carpet vehicle::You want to be able to enjoy your existing carpet for years to come.
That means taking the time to properly maintain it.
This article will focus on the role walk off mats play and how critical it is to have these mats properly installed prior to your next carpet cleaning.
The most vulnerable areas for soil deposits on the average home carpet are to be found wherever a hard floor surface is adjacent to a carpeted surface.
Such areas may include the kitchen floor next to the dining room carpet, the bathroom floor next to the hallway carpet, the mud room entrance area next to the entrance carpet, and so on.
When no walk off mats are present in such areas, there is often a much more noticeable build up of soil on the carpet.
Soil is most pronounced close to the hard floor areas and then progressively less so as one walks further along the carpet and away from the hard floor areas.
This is because in the absence of suitable walk off mats, the carpet closest to the hard floor surface is serving as the walk off mat where fresh soil is stripped off the feet and deposited there regularly.
But, you may already have mats and yet your carpet is still showing heavy soil deposits.
Yes, you may have mats in place, but are they truly doing their job as walk off mats or are they merely decorative rather than functional?
First of all, to be effective as a walk off mat, it must be long enough to allow for 4 walking footsteps on its surface before stepping off onto the adjacent carpet.
This is not enough for significant soil to be removed from the soles before walking onto the carpet.
Given the layout of your hard floors next to your carpeted surfaces, having a mat of sufficient length can pose a challenge.
Another option is to install a couple of shorter lengths, half on the hard floor and the other half on the carpet.
You can purchase an underlay material that is easily cut to size with scissors.
This underlay will help to keep your mats in place.
Thirdly, look for washable mats.
Today there are many colours and patterns available for walk off mats and you can also purchase mats that are machine washable for easy maintenance.
Vacuum and wash your mats regularly to remove the buildup of dry soil and your carpet will continue to stay looking clean and beautiful for longer intervals between professional cleanings.
